This week I had the opportunity to go to Kitchener-Waterloo with Mrs. Witmer to help run the first meeting of the Girls’ Government program that I have been working on developing for the past couple of months. Girls’ Government is a program that was first started by MPP Cheri DiNovo three years ago and is designed to get girls in grade 8 excited about politics in order to encourage them to remain engaged throughout the rest of their lives. The program gives girls the opportunity to choose a politically relevant issue that they’re interested in and to push that issue forward to bring about real change with the support of their teachers and the participating MPP. The program culminates with a visit to Queen’s Park, when the girls will have the opportunity to attend Question Period, hold a press conference and meet with cabinet ministers relevant to their chosen issue. Mrs. Witmer has been very supportive of my interest in developing this project in her riding and our first meeting with the girls on Thursday was a big success – the girls from both of the schools were really excited to be involved, as were the teachers, who were willing to hold additional meetings with the girls in between meetings with Mrs. Witmer and myself. I am really looking forward to meeting with the girls in Kitchener-Waterloo again in a couple of weeks.
