One of the perks of being an OLIP intern is that we get to meet with the Independent Officers of the province. Our third officer meeting of the day was the Information and Privacy Commissioner. Ann Cavoukian, the Commissioner, has a contagious passion for issues of privacy, security and freedom of information. She reminded us that “we cannot have freedom without privacy,” and that openness and transparency are necessary to hold governments to account.
The Commissioner and her office have also launched the Privacy by Design Centre of Excellence. The goal of this initiative is to further educate and advise members of the Ontario Public Service (OPS) on the best privacy practices, in order to ensure quality in protection of personal information. Thank you to Commissioner Cavoukian, Deputy Commissioner Beamish, as well as Estella and Michelle for taking the time to meet with us interns.
