Second Month with the Opposition

I can’t believe it has been two months since my placement began. Time is really flying and I’m being kept busy in Ms. Jones’ office. Aside my usual stint of writing Member’s Statements and speaking notes, I have begun to delve more deeply in the issues pertaining to the Select Committee of Mental Health and Addictions that Ms. Jones sits on. In a throw back to graduate school, Ms. Jones has asked me to read and take notes on books and reports relating to mental health, addictions and homelessness. Exposure to this kind of literature has been an absolute eye opener to the social, economic, political and psychological issues that revolves around these incredibly complex subjects. Attending the Select Committee also has provided a sample of the trials and tribulations that families, individuals, associations and support groups face in trying to access resources and help for those who need it. Politics is about change and watching MPPs work together attempting to impact some meaningful change in this area certainly has been inspiring, to say the least.

Maegan on Recruitment Fairs

November has been extremely busy for the recruitment committee!! Starting off with a visit to Waterloo, Laurier and Guelph all within 2 days, we have been very active in trying to inform students about the amazing opportunity that is OLIP! We have been to classrooms, career fairs and specific program events. We have also met with students from York’s Law and Society Program, University of Toronto Master’s students as well as a presentation to a MA and PhD program at Ryerson. We have many more visits being planned in the New Year, but it would seem that there is already a great deal of interest amongst students and I anticipate a lot of applications this year!
